Overview
Registered in 1984 by R. Benedict, this large cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'August Moon' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Aspen Gold' (pollen parent). 'Michigan Gold' is visually distinctive for its bright lemon yellow leaf margins with slight undulations, contrasting with a green leaf center, and its substantial mature dimensions.
In the Garden
'Michigan Gold' forms a clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, as is typical for gold-margined hostas, where the leaf coloration remains stable. This large specimen works well as a mid-border accent or groundcover in shaded beds, pairing effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Michigan Gold' may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
