Overview
Registered in 2002 by an unknown breeder, *Hosta* 'Michael's Mud Pie' is a giant-sized cultivar distinguished by its substantial blue-green foliage with a pronounced glaucous bloom on the upper surface. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring up to 13 inches in length and 10 inches in width, feature moderately wavy and cupped margins with 13 to 14 pairs of veins, creating a textured, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a slow-growing mound reaching 24 inches in height and 40 inches in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, glaucous leaves pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its cool blue-green tones. Due to its substantial size, 'Michael's Mud Pie' is not recommended for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, tender leaves are susceptible to damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
