Overview
Registered in 2004, 'Mesa Verde' is a giant hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta montana* macrophylla (pod parent) and *H. 'Sagae'* (pollen parent). This cultivar is distinguished by its very large, broadly ovate blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, dull upper surfaces, and a slightly shiny underside, forming a substantial spreading mound.
In the Garden
'Mesa Verde' reaches a mature spread of 72 inches (182.9 cm) in diameter and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for filling substantial spaces in woodland borders. The blue-green foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As a large-leaved hosta, it may be susceptible to slug damage; monitor and manage as needed in damp conditions.
