Overview
Registered in 2000 by P. Ruh as a sport of *Hosta* 'Regal Ruffles', 'Mesa Fringe' is a giant, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its heavily rippled, medium green leaves with wide, irregular margins. The variegated foliage, combined with substantial leaf dimensions and a dense growth habit, sets it apart from its parent.
In the Garden
'Mesa Fringe' reaches a mature spread of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and a height of 26 inches (66.0 cm), making it suitable for use as a specimen or as a bold accent in the middle to back of a border. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its moderate growth rate and large, textured leaves also make it effective for filling broad areas under deciduous trees.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may damage foliage, the heavy leaf texture of 'Mesa Fringe' offers some resistance compared to smoother-leaved cultivars.
