Overview

Registered in 2002, 'Merry Men' is a small hosta of unknown parentage notable for its distinct color combination of creamy white leaf centers framed by medium green margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 4 inches (10.2 cm) long by 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, are dull on both surfaces and lightly cupped, with seven pairs of veins and a tapered base.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and is well-suited for rock gardens, woodland edges, or the front of shaded borders. Its small size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, heucheras, and small shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain evenly moist soil, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Merry Men' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
