Overview

Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Merlin' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Pin Stripe' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaf centers framed by a consistent, pale yellow margin approximately 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide, which matures to a good gold edge.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter. The broadly ovate leaves, each 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide with a cordate base and 10 vein pairs, have a dull surface on both sides and slightly rippled margins. 'Merlin' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-centered foliage with gold margins holds color well; it pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland garden settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Merlin' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
