Overview
Registered in 2004, 'Medieval Age' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar derived from a self-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Galaxy'. Its most distinctive feature is the heavily rippled, bright yellow margin, approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide, which contrasts with the green leaf center and creates a deeply wavy leaf edge.
In the Garden
'Medieval Age' forms a mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its broadly ovate, deeply wavy leaves provide textural interest. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland garden settings.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Medieval Age' shows typical hosta susceptibility to slugs and snails, which may damage the wavy leaf margins; deer browsing is also a potential concern in areas where deer are present.
