Overview
Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'June', 'May' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with greenish-yellow margins. The foliage exhibits a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and the leaf base is cordate. The plant forms a compact mound reaching 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate.
In the Garden
'May' is suited for partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, where its blue-green center and gold-edged leaves provide subtle contrast. Its small stature makes it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or woodland settings. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials of similar scale, and is suitable for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
