Overview
Registered in 2013 by G. R. Goodwin from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Maurice Mason' is a miniature cultivar distinguished by its intensely twisted, heavily rippled leaves and rhizomatous growth habit. The lance-shaped leaves, measuring 2 inches (5.1 cm) long and 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) wide, are medium green with heavy marginal ripples, dull on the upper surface and very shiny beneath, with a lightly cupped, moderately folded, and intensely wavy form.
In the Garden
'Maurice Mason' forms a compact clump reaching 3 inches (7.6 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its small size makes it well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. The miniature dimensions also recommend it for container cultivation, where its twisted foliage provides textural contrast alongside other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, rippled leaves may be less palatable to deer and slugs compared to smoother-leaved cultivars, though protection is still advisable in areas with heavy pressure.
