Overview
Registered in 1991 by W. Vaughn, this small hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Frances Williams' (pod parent) and *H.* 'August Moon' (pollen parent). 'Maui Buttercups' is visually distinctive for its green leaves with medium yellow margins, producing a compact, rounded mound of foliage.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 14 inches (35.6 cm) and height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), 'Maui Buttercups' is suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, though the yellow margins may intensify with some morning light. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas that complement its scale.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
