Overview

Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Matilda' is a small-sized cultivar derived from the pod parent *H.* 'Wahoo' and an unnamed pollen parent. It is visually distinguished by its broadly ovate, light medium green leaves with irregular, creamy white margins that vary in width from 0.3 to 1.9 cm.

In the Garden

'Matilda' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* and *Tiarella*. Its compact size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may cause damage, the slightly shiny leaf surface may offer some resistance compared to more textured cultivars.
