Overview
Registered in 2005 by B. Kuk, *Hosta* 'Marlene' is a large sport of *H.* 'Rippling Waves' distinguished by its blue-green leaf centers with golden yellow margins. The broadly ovate, cordate-based leaves are 10.5 inches long and 7.5 inches wide, with a dull upper surface and glaucous bloom beneath, and feature twisted tips, light waviness, and light corrugation.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 21 inches in height and 32 inches in diameter, with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green centers and golden margins remain most distinct. The 30- to 33-inch scapes bear greenish gold flowers. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it appropriate for mid-border or specimen placement.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard hosta care includes monitoring for slugs and deer, which may damage foliage.
