Year registered1998
Section classV-1

Overview

Registered in 1998, this miniature hosta of unknown parentage forms a compact mound of medium green leaves with flat, variegated margins. 'Margey' reaches only 3 inches (7.6 cm) in height and 5 inches (12.7 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) long and 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide, each bearing two pairs of veins and a rounded base.

In the Garden

Suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, 'Margey' matures into a tidy, low clump ideal for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. Its diminutive size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its moderate growth rate and rhizomatous habit can be easily managed. Pair with other small woodland perennials such as miniature ferns or creeping sedges to maintain scale.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, though the small leaf size may reduce attractiveness to these pests.
