Overview
Registered in 1994, this large hybrid hosta produces a dense, mound-shaped clump reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height. The foliage is variegated, with light green leaves bearing heavy rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside; each leaf measures 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with 12 vein pairs and a cordate base.
In the Garden
Hosta 'Manhattan' performs best in partial to full shade, where its substantial mound habit and rippled leaf margins provide strong textural contrast. Mature plants form a broad clump suitable for mid-border placement or as a specimen in shaded beds. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its large, light green foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
