Overview

Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Mama's Gold' is a large, upright cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. ventricosa*. It is visually distinguished by its green leaves with golden yellow, slightly rippled margins, a cordate leaf base, and a greenish yellow scape that reaches 38 to 40 inches (96.5 to 101.6 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Mama's Gold' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and reaches a mature spread of 28 inches (71.1 cm) with a height of 16 inches (40.6 cm). Its moderate growth rate and upright habit make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its gold-margined foliage.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
