Overview

Registered in 2000 from unknown parentage, 'Maize and Blue' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with green-streaked margins and a very shiny upper surface. The leaves, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide, bear a glaucous bloom on their undersides and are cordate at the base, with 9 to 11 vein pairs.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound 16 inches (40.6 cm) tall and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. The blue-green foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting leaf textures.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges; note that hostas are susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary.
