Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Magnificent Obsession' is a giant hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Galaxy' (pod parent) and *Hosta hypoleuca* (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinctive for its exceptionally large, blue-green leaves that reach nearly 14 inches in length and 12 inches in width, with slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
'Magnificent Obsession' forms an upright, fast-growing clump reaching 32 inches in height and 51 inches in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded to partly shaded borders. Its substantial leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture and scale. The plant's large size and rapid growth rate make it less suited for containers and better placed in open garden beds where it can spread freely.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
