Overview

Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Magic Mountain' is a giant blue-green cultivar derived from *Hosta montana macrophylla* as the pod parent with an unknown pollen parent. This cultivar is visually distinctive for its upright, early-season blue foliage, producing substantial broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and lightly rippled margins, reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in length and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in width with 13 to 14 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Magic Mountain' forms a substantial upright clump 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in partial to full shade. Its large blue-green leaves provide strong contrast when paired with gold or chartreuse hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Actaea*. Given its giant size, this cultivar is not suited for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in spring when leaves are emerging, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth begins. While 'Magic Mountain' shows typical hosta resistance to deer, monitor for slug damage on new foliage in damp conditions.
