Overview

Registered in 2011 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Catherine', 'Magic Island' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its reverse-variegated foliage: blue-green leaf centers are bordered by wide, flat gold margins. The leaves are elliptic with tapered bases, measure 4.7 inches (11.9 cm) long by 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) wide, and bear eight pairs of veins; the upper surface is slightly shiny, the underside dull. The plant forms an upright, moderately growing clump reaching 9.8 inches (24.9 cm) in height and 15.7 inches (39.9 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

'Magic Island' is suitable for partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, though its reported sun resistance allows it to tolerate more light than many blue cultivars. At maturity it remains compact, making it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and small shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The cultivar is noted for slug resistance, reducing the need for routine pest management, but standard deer deterrents may still be required in areas with high deer pressure.
