Overview
Registered in 2007 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Madelynn' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a dull glaucous bloom on the upper surface and a slightly shiny glaucous blue underside. The leaves are notable for their unique pebbled puckering, concavely arched form, and long tapered twisted tips, with moderately wavy and corrugated margins.
In the Garden
Reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, 'Madelynn' forms a substantial mound with a moderate growth rate, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its powder-blue foliage pairs well with golden or chartreuse-leaved perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Carex*, and its large leaves provide effective ground cover beneath deciduous trees. The green scapes, 21 to 24 inches (53.3 to 61.0 cm) tall, bear typical lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur, particularly on the broad, textured leaves.
