Overview

Registered in 2002, *Hosta* 'MacBenedict' is a large sport of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' (pod parent; pollen parent unknown) notable for its nearly round, deeply corrugated leaves that exhibit unstable, multi-colored streaking in shades of dark green, light green, greenish yellow, yellow, and creamy white against a medium green ground, all edged with white margins. The foliage is slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the leaf blades measure up to 11.25 inches (28.6 cm) long by 9.75 inches (24.8 cm) wide, with 15 prominent vein pairs underneath.

In the Garden

'MacBenedict' forms an upright, slow-growing clump reaching 27 inches (68.6 cm) in height and 37 inches (94.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or accent in partial to dappled shade typical of hosta-growing zones. Its large, boldly textured leaves provide contrast alongside finer-textured perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*, and the variegated foliage brightens shaded borders. Given its size, it is not suited for container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage accordingly.
