Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Lunar Sea' is a sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon' distinguished by its blue-green leaves with wide, chartreuse margins. The leaf center is light golden yellow, creating a tricolor effect, while the blade surface is dull above with a glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
This medium-sized cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 37 inches (94.0 cm) and a height of 17 inches (43.2 cm), with a semi-upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the leaf colors remain most vibrant; excessive sun may cause the gold centers to fade. The broadly ovate, moderately corrugated leaves with cordate bases and 10 to 12 vein pairs provide textural contrast when paired with fine-leaved perennials such as ferns or astilbes. Its unruly habit suits naturalistic woodland settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Lunar Sea' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
