Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Lumberjack' is a large, upright cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its substantial, nearly round, blue-green leaves with wide, greenish-yellow, slightly rippled margins, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial clump reaching 43 inches (109.2 cm) in diameter and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and its large, corrugated leaves with heavy substance are well-suited for use as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The upright scapes, reaching 27 to 34 inches (68.6 to 86.4 cm), bear flowers in midsummer; companion plants could include ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though standard control measures may still be necessary in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage.
