Overview
Registered in 2014, *Hosta* 'Louie Louie' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a complex cross involving *H.* 'Liberty Bell', *H.* 'Urajiro Hachijo', and *H. pycnophylla* as the pod parent, with *H.* 'Mikawa-no-Yuki' as the pollen parent. The plant is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with near-white, heavily rippled margins and its saturated burgundy scapes that bear contrasting creamy green bracts.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 42 inches (107 cm) and a height of 13 inches (33 cm), with an upright growth habit and fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. The deeply wavy, piecrust-edged leaves provide textural contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, glaucous foliage is attractive to both pests.
