Overview
Registered in 2015 by an unknown breeder, *Hosta* 'Lois' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its heart-shaped, very shiny leaves with a medium green center and variable cream to brassy gold margins. The broadly ovate leaves, which reach 7 inches (17.8 cm) in length and 6 inches (15.2 cm) in width, feature 10 vein pairs and a twisted tip with a cordate base.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, where its glossy foliage and variegated margins remain most vibrant. The medium size and dense habit make it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds; it is not typically recommended for container culture due to its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
