Overview

Registered in 2002, this miniature hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Wiggle Worms' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Red Sox' (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinctive for its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a satin sheen on both surfaces, combined with red petioles that extend into a red scape.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Little Red Rooster' forms a compact, fast-growing mound reaching 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) in height and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its miniature size makes it well suited for troughs, containers, or the front of a shaded border. The narrow leaves and red stems provide textural contrast when planted near broader-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
