Overview

Registered in 1976 by L. Englerth, 'Little Blue' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage. Its distinctive variegated foliage features dark green margins surrounding a lighter blue-green leaf center, with six pairs of veins per leaf.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a compact, mounding clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited for border fronts, rock gardens, or as a low groundcover. Its moderate size makes it appropriate for container culture, and it pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Little Blue' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for leaf damage and apply controls as needed.
