Overview
Registered in 2009 as a sport of a seedling of unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Lightning Bolt' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its long, narrow, lanceolate leaves with yellow centers and creamy white margins. The leaf blades measure 6 inches (15.2 cm) in length and 2 inches (5.1 cm) in width, with 7 to 8 vein pairs, and exhibit a dull to slightly shiny upper surface with a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature diameter of 18 inches (45.7 cm) and a height of 5 inches (12.7 cm), 'Lightning Bolt' forms a low, mound-like clump with moderate growth rate. Its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where its narrow, variegated foliage provides textural contrast. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Standard hosta cultivation practices apply: maintain consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Lightning Bolt' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be warranted in areas where these pests are prevalent.
