Overview
Registered in 2016 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Light Ray' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its upright, broadly ovate leaves with creamy white margins measuring 0.75 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) wide against a medium green center. The leaf surface is slightly shiny on both sides, and the blade is relatively flat with a cordate base, giving the plant a bold, architectural appearance.
In the Garden
'Light Ray' reaches a mature spread of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, as is typical for hostas, and its upright habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. The strong white margin provides contrast when paired with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Light Ray' may be browsed by deer and is susceptible to slug damage, particularly on new foliage.
