Overview
Registered in 1985 by R. Benedict, this small hosta cultivar arose from a cross between *H.* 'Yellow Splash' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Neat Splash' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its variegated foliage, featuring green margins surrounding a lighter leaf center, with three to four pairs of veins per leaf.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Liberty Bell' reaches a mature size of 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. Its compact dimensions also make it a candidate for container culture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
