Overview

Registered in 2008 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Summer Breeze', 'Lettuce Salad' is a large, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, heavily substanced leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a slightly shiny surface. The leaves measure 9 inches (22.9 cm) both in length and width, with 12 to 13 vein pairs, and exhibit a lightly wavy, lightly corrugated texture with a cordate base.

In the Garden

'Lettuce Salad' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or as a specimen in partial to full shade. Its vigorous growth rate and substantial foliage pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials; the large size precludes container cultivation for most situations.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its heavy leaf substance offers some resistance to minor pest pressure.
