Overview

Registered in 1998, 'Leatherneck' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Yellow Splash Rim' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Blue Dimples' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its upright, substantial mound of medium blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside.

In the Garden

'Leatherneck' reaches a mature size of 40 inches (101.6 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its blue-green foliage. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in woodland borders and shaded beds.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Leatherneck' may require protection from slugs and deer in the garden.
