Overview

Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Leather and Lace' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its intensely piecrusted, serrated leaf margins and a four- to five-color leaf surface. The medium blue-green leaves are broadly ovate with a cordate base, bearing a wide, yellow margin that transitions through multiple tones at the junction, while the blade is moderately to heavily rugose, lightly twisted and folded, and intensely wavy.

In the Garden

Reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 27 inches (68.6 cm) in diameter with a flared upright habit, 'Leather and Lace' is suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its fast growth rate and compact size make it an effective groundcover in shaded areas.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitor regularly and employ control measures as needed.
