Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Linda Sue' registered by an unknown hybridizer in 2009, 'Laverne and Shirley' is a large, slow-growing cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with medium gold margins. The thick, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and glaucous bloom on both surfaces give the plant a substantial, textured appearance.
In the Garden
'Laverne and Shirley' reaches a mature spread of approximately 45 inches (114 cm) and a height of 18 inches (46 cm), forming a dense, mound-like clump. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its slow growth rate makes it suitable for long-term placement in borders or woodland gardens. The large leaf size and prominent gold margins pair well with fine-textured ferns or dark-leaved heucheras, and the plant's substantial substance provides good slug resistance.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the thick leaves offer some protection, monitor for slug damage in damp conditions and maintain typical hosta-growing zone care to preserve the glaucous bloom.
