Overview
Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Lavender Stocking' is a large hybrid derived from *H. kiyosumiensis* and *H. pycnophylla*. The cultivar is distinguished by its heavily textured, very shiny blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the undersides and medium green, slightly rippled margins.
In the Garden
This large hosta reaches a mature spread of 43 inches (109.2 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with scapes rising to 31 inches (78.7 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved cultivars, which require protection from direct sun to maintain leaf color. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border, where it pairs well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though deer may browse the foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
