Overview

Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Lavender Doll' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. kiyosumiensis* (pod parent) and *H. pycnophylla* (pollen parent). It forms a dense, mound-like clump of blue-green foliage with light green, slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides.

In the Garden

This hosta reaches approximately 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved cultivars, where its leaf color remains most intense. The 28 to 30.5 inch (71.1 to 77.5 cm) scapes bear lavender flowers in midsummer. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or woodland garden settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, this cultivar may be damaged by slugs and deer; monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
