Overview
Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Laura' is a large-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between a *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' seedling (pod parent) and *Hosta montana macrophylla* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its medium green, cordate-based leaves with broad, greenish white, flat margins that measure approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense mound reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with leaf blades 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited for mid-border or specimen placement in woodland gardens. Its large size and bold variegation pair effectively with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally low-maintenance, this cultivar may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
