Overview
Registered in 1997 by J. & D. Ward as a sport of *Hosta* 'Zounds', 'Laura and Darrell' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its medium green leaves with broad, yellow-gold margins. The leaf blades measure 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, with a cordate base and 14 to 15 vein pairs; the upper surface is slightly shiny, the underside dull.
In the Garden
'Laura and Darrell' reaches a mature spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 16 inches (40.6 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, where the gold margins hold their color without scorching. The substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through routine monitoring or barriers.
