Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Late Jewel' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its heavily rippled, broadly ovate leaves with green margins, a very shiny upper surface, and a distinctive pointed, twisted leaf tip that curves downward. The leaf blade exhibits a deeply wavy edge, and the scape is green with red speckling, reaching 15 to 18 inches (38–46 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Late Jewel' forms a compact mound 12.5 inches (32 cm) tall and 21 inches (53 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It is suitable for shaded borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover in small areas; its small size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Companion plants may include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials that complement its glossy, variegated foliage.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade, typical for hosta-growing zones. Water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Slugs and deer may cause damage and should be managed as needed.
