Overview
Registered in 2002 as a sport of an unidentified parent, *Hosta* 'Lars of Mars' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with dark green centers and creamy white margins. The leaf margins are notably thin, measuring 0.1 to 0.2 inches (0.3 to 0.5 cm) wide, and the foliage exhibits a slightly shiny surface on both sides.
In the Garden
This compact hosta forms a mound-like clump reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its white-margined leaves contrast well with darker-foliaged perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its small size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
