Overview
Registered in 1997 by an unknown breeder, *Hosta* 'Lakeside Surf Rider' is a giant cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta* 'Lakeside Ripples' and *Hosta* 'Sagae'. It is visually distinctive for its large, blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a cordate base, and a slight sheen on the upper surface, combined with an upright growth habit.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas. At maturity, it forms a substantial clump reaching 72 inches (182.9 cm) in diameter and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in height, with scapes rising 48 to 60 inches (121.9 to 152.4 cm) tall. Its fast growth rate and large size make it suitable as a specimen plant or as a focal point in shaded borders, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally robust, this cultivar may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be warranted in areas where these pests are prevalent.
