Overview
Registered in 1997 by an unknown breeder, 'Lakeside Spellbinder' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its broad, creamy white leaf centers framed by dark green, flat margins. The leaves are cordate at the base, dull on both surfaces, and produce a strong contrast between the light interior and darker border.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound 8 inches (20.3 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where the white leaf centers remain most stable. The substantial leaf size (9 inches long, 7 inches wide) and tall scapes (50 to 66 inches) make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
