Overview

Registered in 1991 by M. Chastain, 'Lakeside Ripples' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its heavily ruffled, variegated foliage. The leaves are medium green with uniform ruffling along the margins, glossy on the upper surface, and measure 12 inches (30.5 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide with 14 vein pairs.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright mound reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its ruffled leaf margins are most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The tall scapes, which can reach 48 inches (121.9 cm), produce pale lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Lakeside Ripples' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
