Overview
Registered in 1998 by an unknown breeder, 'Lakeside Penny Pincher' is a small hosta distinguished by its dark green leaves with golden yellow margins and notably shiny surfaces on both sides. The leaves measure 3 inches (7.6 cm) long by 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with five vein pairs and a rounded base, while the golden margins are 0.38 inches (1.0 cm) wide and slightly rippled.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in height, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of borders. Its small size makes it an excellent choice for container cultivation, and it pairs well with other small shade perennials such as heucheras or ferns.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
