Overview
Registered in 2004 by Mary Chastain of Lakeside Acres, 'Lakeside Old Smokey' is a large hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with white margins and a distinctive smokey cast. The foliage exhibits a glaucous bloom on the upper surface and dull white coloration beneath, with slightly rippled margins and broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials that complement its cool coloration. The green scapes, reaching 25 to 28 inches (63.5 to 71.1 cm), carry flowers typical of the genus.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and employ control measures if necessary. This cultivar is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones.
