Overview
Registered in 2003 by Mary Chastain of Lakeside Acres, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid of two unnamed seedlings. It is visually distinctive for its bright medium-green, lance-shaped leaves with heavily rippled, yellow margins that contrast sharply with the darker center, and for its very shiny upper leaf surface.
In the Garden
Reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in both height and diameter, 'Lakeside Hoola Hoop' forms a compact, upright clump with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its small size makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or containers. The bright yellow margins provide good contrast when paired with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
