Overview
Registered in 1998, 'Lakeside Happy Talk' is a small hosta of unknown parentage, raised from two unnamed seedlings. Its distinctive foliage consists of medium green leaves with creamy white margins that are notably wider than the green center, a reversal of the typical variegation pattern found in many small hostas.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) in height and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its small size and rounded, slightly shiny leaves make it suitable for the front of a shaded border, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other small woodland perennials such as ferns, heucheras, and miniature epimediums.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its small stature may make it less conspicuous to browsing animals.
