Overview

Registered in 1994 by an unknown breeder, 'Lakeside Grandee' is a large, mound-forming hosta distinguished by its heavily rippled, dark green leaf margins and substantial leaf dimensions. The variegated foliage features leaves up to 13 inches (33.0 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with 14 vein pairs, a cordate base, and a slightly shiny upper surface contrasting with a dull underside.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and a height of 14 inches (35.6 cm), forming a dense, rounded mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or mid-border accent, though it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its large mature dimensions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may occasionally feed on the foliage, the thick, rippled leaf margins offer some resistance compared to smoother-leaved cultivars.
