Overview
Registered in 1993, *Hosta* 'Lakeside Emerald Lights' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H. ventricosa* and *H.* 'Invincible'. Its most distinctive features are the dark green leaves with heavy rippled margins, a very shiny upper surface, and a slightly shiny underside, which together create a pronounced textural contrast.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact mound reaching approximately 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in height, with leaves measuring 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its moderate size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. The dark green foliage pairs well with lighter-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protection from deer and slugs may be necessary, especially on the shiny, rippled foliage.
