Overview

Registered in 1998 by Mary Chastain, 'Lakeside Blue Confusion' is a medium-sized hosta notable for its intensely blue-green leaf margins and cordate leaf bases. The cultivar results from a cross between *Hosta* 'Lakeside Sapphire Pleats' and an unnamed blue seedling, producing leaves with a dull upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

This hosta forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains color intensity, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size suits border fronts or shaded rock gardens, though it is not typically recommended for containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, applying fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing; monitor accordingly.
